I guess a little cat update is in order. This has not been a good week in the rappyhold, but we're doing ok-ish.
Schnitz continued wearing the collar until yesterday, at which point I had to remove it because we had a Kiwi emergency. When I came home yesterday, Kiwi's eye was kind of red, and it looked scratched. I assumed Schnitz did it to her while they were playing, but she seemed ok, and I was planning on going to the vet on Friday anyway, so I didn't make much of it. I did notice that her sneezing, however, had become a little more frequent, and again, was going to bring it up to the vet.
At around midnight last night, I caught sight of Kiwi just as I was headed to bed, and her right eye was completely shut. I went to investigate, and when I opened it, all I saw was blood, and something that shouldn't have been sticking out, sticking out. I obviously freaked out, because she kept sneezing and swatting at it, so I immediately removed the collar from Schnitzel and put it on her, placed her in her carrier, and engineered another sock bandage for Schnitz. I then hopped in a cab and went to a veterinary clinic that's open overnight.
The vet was operating on some poor, three-legged dog, but he came over just to take a look and said not to worry and that he could fix this. I was of course convinced that she had actually scratched her eyeball out, but this was luckily not the case. He gave her a numbing shot, which she took like a hero, and then we waited for about 15 minutes for him to finish the operation.
He then looked her over, and gave her an anaesthetic, which pretty much put her out. Then he did stuff that's too upsetting for me to recount, but it was all good. While we were waiting for the counter-anaesthetic to take effect, he helped me trim her nails, which was a huge help. Of course, much easier to do when the cat is out cold, but I'll have to brave doing it to Schnitzel, because she's ripping me to pieces. Then for some reason, I nearly passed out. I think I was just a little overwhelmed at that point, and very tired, and I hadn't even seen the bill yet, which turned out to be atrocious.
Anyway, the eye thing isn't the only problem, but he gave me a cream treatment for that. Then he prescribed a liquid treatment for the sneezing, and gave me some antibiotic pills for her to take. She also has some sort of fungus, which, using my crack deduction skillz, I've derived is what the sore(s) on Schnitzel are. He gave me a wash to treat that, but only for Kiwi, so I'll need to get more to treat Schnitzel as well.
So yeah. That's quite the medical clinic I've opened at home :). Each of them has a bunch of treatments I need to apply, but they're taking them like the brave little soldiers that they are.
I had to leave Kiwi in her carrier overnight, which she did not take well to at all, so suffice it to say, I got NO sleep at all last night.
I was really worried this morning, as I started a new job yesterday, and could hardly call in and say my cat was sick, so I had to leave her. My concern was that she had managed to remove the collar twice this morning, and the entire day at work I had movies running through my mind of what she'd do to herself while I was out. I literally ran a kilometer from the bus to get home quickly, only to find that her eye looks MUCH better, and that both of them are in good spirits. Of course, I had to spend some serious time looking for both the collar and the sock, as they managed to lose both, but neither seems worse for the wear, and they're back to their regular fighting tricks again, kicking each other's ass.
So yeah, I'm a little exhausted now, but I'm really optimistic that they'll be just fine.

Posted by: Jorge at May 24, 2005 11:33 PMThe kitties are fine. I, on the other hand, have been infected by their fungus, and have to find a doctor to treat me before it gets out of hand.
