I'm often asked why I moved back to Israel and with little hesitation, my answer is generally "Because it's cold in Canada". It certainly isn't because I'm proud to live here. Although I love to live here, I find myself mortified and ashamed to be governed by my government and to be legally "protected" by my judiciary.
I don't have the energy to write about it right now, but yesterday's Israel Supreme Court ruling upholding the ban on the unification of Israeli-Palestinian couples just makes me want to spit.
I'll try to come up with something a little more coherent on the matter later in the week. In the meantime, have a look around the various opinion pieces in Haaretz. They're spot on as far as reflecting how I feel about.
Here is the editorial article by Haaretz's Editor-in-Chief, David Landau.
Yitzhak Laor's Op-Ed piece particularly touches on the blatant racism and double standard of the ruling, pointing out that the no one seems to mind the over 300,000 non-Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union who found their way to Israel and were granted residency, meaning that this is strictly an anti-Palestinian decision, rather than one upholding the objective of maintaining a Jewish demographic majority in Israel. Moreover, the Court's claim that Israel is within it's right to deny residency to subject of an "enemy state" is ludicrous, given that the Palestinians don't HAVE a state, a situation that may have a smidge to do with nearly forty years of Israeli occupation.
