Sherry sent me a link to this CNN story about the Oxford Project. It's brilliant.
I'm recycling something I did back in November 2005, since my life is quite a bit different now than it was then.
List three things about my life that you would like me to photograph.
This evening there was a fire throwing event at the southern end of the Tel Aviv boardwalk, right by the dolphinarium. I'm glad I brought my tripod along, because some of the shots turned out awesome.
Walking around Munich yesterday, I became strangely obsessed with lines.
Saturday, May 5, 2007 was 24 hours of flickr day. I spent the day travelling in Switzerland, as evidenced below...
Taking advantage of the horizontal scroll, here's another one - slightly less dramatic.
I've always liked the idea of stitching photos together into a panormic view and have been looking at panographies on flickr lately.
I think I'd like to give those a try as well.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, February 2007
* On a funny note, this picture was originally sized at a height of 750p. When I resized it to 500, the width reduced to 1936, which happens to be the year that the ski jump site at
Garmisch-Partenkirchen was first used in the olympics.
Jorge: Some great stuff in there.
Rappy: anything in particular you like?
Jorge: That Jesus with all the stain glass windows (or whatever those are) is wicked.
Jorge: Have you sold anything of yours?
Rappy: no, haven't tried.
Rappy: Wanna buy a picture?
Jorge: Hahaha.
Jorge: Not yet.
Jorge: Maybe someday.
Jorge: When I am not poor anymore.
Rappy: heh, wait until you have to buy diapers...
Jorge: :D
Jorge: OH!
Jorge: FOR THE BABY!
Jorge: I thought you knew something I didn't
Rappy: Hahahaha!
The last picture I owed Sherry was of the cafe in which I (used) to spend ridiculous amounts of time.

I tend to sit at the tables under the awning, usually closer to the foreground of the picture.
Ok, kids. I still owe pictures to Sherry, highwaygirl and lifeonhold, but they will take a bit of doing, so I'll put them up at a later date. I have a new project that requires your input.
Post a recipe in the comment section, and I will attempt to prepare it and document the process on camera.
Caveats:
Feed me, people!
Erika (aka Roo) wanted to see:
1. Something that defines my city.

Property taxes. That or old people, and my tax bill was a lot more handy. When eyeball and I lived in an apartment in Tel Aviv that was three times the size of this place and right in the heart of the hippest neighbourhood in the city, we paid about 1/3 less in property taxes. I suppose having my garbage collected three times a day accounts for the difference.
2. Me and your sister together.

My brother and I took eyeball out to dinner on Friday to celebrate her awesome accomplishment on her ride this past week. We went to a restaurant in south Tel Aviv, which was pretty ok. The picture doesn't really tell the real story of the street. The brothel was two doors down on the right. The casino four doors down. The restaurant door had a security guard PLUS it was locked from inside and required buzzing in. CREEPY.
3. Me while watching Alias on my computer. :)

Only a couple more of these to go. Stay tuned for another reader-requested photography project!
Jenny (aka Ka Ching) wanted to see:
1. The first thing I see when I wake up in the morning.

This is the first thing I see, although technically, I neither see it in daylight (as my bedroom shutter is always drawn) nor lit up (as the light is usually off when I awake). I think this fixture is actually quite gorgeous. I *may*, should I ever get around to it, try to do something decorative in my bedroom relating to it.
2. What's out my front door and/or down my street.

This is my street, as photographed last night. The entrance to my building is on the left, right next to the large utility pole. It's a 3-story low-rise, with 4 apartments on each floor. The truck on the right side with all the crap on the roof belongs to someone living across the street who I presume to be a contractor.
3. The one thing in my house that makes it feel like HOME. ;)

I mean, could you just die? Are they not the best, cutest, fluffiest thing ever?
Teemy actually made me work for this entry...
She wanted to see:
1. the view from my window (like Sherry)

The view is horrific, but look at all the cute kitties! The black and white one is a regular, but that grey kitten was a one day apparition. He was ADORABLE and I totally wanted to bring him inside.
2. the inside of my fridge (also requested this from hwg)

I am exceptionally embarrassed by this photo. All I seem to have in my fridge is condiments and beverages. So lame. To make up for it, here's a picture of the front of my fridge. I cut that picture out of the newspaper because I thought it was stunning.

3. my favorite meal, next time I eat it.

I usually don't have the salad, but I didn't want y'all to judge me for the absence of green on my plate. On the menu are soy chicken, scalloped potatoes, and a mixed green salad. So yummy and so easy to make. It's my standby meal.
I only have 2/3rds of Sherry's requested pictures, but she gave me the go ahead to post the third at a later date.
Sherry wanted to see:
1. The cafe I used to hang out in so much - still to be photographed
2. The view from my bedroom window.

I never look out this window. The shutter is always closed and Schnitzel often hangs out on the ledge, looking through the cracks. Being on the first floor, I'd rather keep it closed for privacy. And also, it's really quite ugly.
3. My favorite pair of shoes.

Are these not the HOTT? I got them in Florida when I visited heewig a couple of years ago, at Marshall's, if I recall correctly. They set me back an astounding $15 dollars. I friggin love them beyond compare, although I don't find many occasions to wear them.
Doomy wanted to see:
1. My cookbooks - I had to take several pictures in order to capture the magnitude. Here they are, top shelf to bottom.

2. My makeup drawer/bag/case - I'm so ashamed. It's just this box with everything thrown in willy-nilly and largely ignored. I rarely bother with makeup anymore. As soon as I figure out a new storage solution in my bathroom there'll be more room for something presentable. I do have an idea that involved empty Biore facial wipes cases.

3. My computer area, where I sit and write and chat with the Americans so many miles and hours away - You mean my living room sofa? Where I'm pretty much always sitting unless I'm in bed? Here it is! I just bought the coffee table today. It is FHUGE. When not taking a picture of it, I am normally perched on the sofa with my feet up on the table and the cats spread out on my belly. The window above the sofa has a wide ledge and bars and the cats spend many hours there, checking out the neighbourhood cats and spying on my neighbours.

I totally stole this idea from myaimistrue.
List three things about my life that you would like me to photograph.
I haven't got much to post with aforesaid job kicking my ass and making me miserable, but here are some pictures I took at a cooking workshop last weekend.
It was led by the (very recently departed) chef of one of the most well respected restaurants in the country - the one on my 101 list.

I've started a new job that is all sort of kicking my ass, so I've had no time to do anything entry worth. Instead, I present you with a wicked picture, taken by my brother last summer.

My photography course, which started off exceptionally promising, finally and mercifully came to a close today.
I will admit to having learned some important stuff, and having really enjoyed working in the dark room.
I will NOT miss, however, the bumbling instructor, the crappy equipment, and the utter disorganization. I mean, 10 lessons and not ONE dedicated to the concept of composition? The fuck?
I kind of wish *I* could design that course, because it would kick all sorts of ass if I did. It would be TOTALLY structured, and entirely visual. Seriously, what good does speaking about depth of field do, if you don't actually SHOW me the difference between one depth and the next? And is it really that difficult to go out and take a few shots, and then throw them into a PowerPoint presentation? That annoyed me to. no. end.
But since it's not my course, I will take note of where not to take more courses, and move on. I am pleased that we get to use the dark room at our leisure any evening over the next month. Now I just need to get my camera cracking and take some pictures.
Speaking of cameras, who here owns a digital SLR? I need some opinions...
So I've had two photography classes so far. The first lesson wasn't bad, and it got "interesting" when we got our first assignment, which was to take two rolls of film of the same object. The title of the assignment was "Boredom in Photography", which I very quickly understood.
The second assignment was an in-class assignment. We learned how to print our pictures, and had to pick three of the 72 pictures to print. I only managed to get two printed, and will do the third one next week. I was a bit worried because I'm not as steady with a film camera as with the digital, but my two prints turned out awesome, and the instructor was very complimentary.

In retrospect, this one turned out a bit dark, but I still love it.

ETA - They actually look much darker than they turned out in print, as these are scans of prints. I'll try to photoshop them a bit later.
Earlier today I attended a truly magnificent photo exhibit. As I was walking through, rather slowly, I really felt that I was in a realm that I belonged to.
A couple of years ago I took a photography course at George Brown College, in Toronto. Those who've heard me speak about it, know that I held a very low opinion of the course, but having thought about it lately, that course was not the total waste I thought it was. The course consisted of 10 sessions, and my main problem with it, was the instructor, who seemed to repeat the same lecture every single week, down to the same tired jokes. In retrospect, I think my disappointment with the course was that I didn't really feel that I mastered any of the technical aspects of photography. I couldn't explain aperture or exposure to you on pain of death. The lack of weekly assignments and critique was also problematic, since I'm a person who needs feedback.
What I did learn, without even realizing, was to study the composition of pictures, and accordingly, to compose them pretty well myself. As I was walking through the exhibit this evening, I was quite amazed that while looking at the pictures, I could point out all sorts of interesting compositional aspects.
For example, in this photo, I noticed that the arc of the arm is continued by the arc of the water, but that it cuts off very abruptly, at the spot where the arm is amputated. I think that prior to taking the course, I would have walked by the picture and just said: "Hmm. Nice colours.", or something equally benign.
Later this month, I'm starting another photography course. Hopefully I'll enjoy it a bit more while taking it, rather than realizing in two years that I might have learned something. Hopefully I'll be able to translate the course into something professional, because I'd love to be able to make a living of sorts doing something I truly enjoy.
Continuing where we left off yesterday, it wouldn't be a photographic entry if it didn't include some windows and doors :)

Pictures from a rainy morning spent with my brother around the port of Jaffa. More tomorrow.

It's a tree! Growing in a rock! Suspended from a building!

A quick trip to the Bahai Gardens in Haifa. I may have posted pictures of the gardens last year, but these were taken a week ago.

One of my favourite places in Tel Aviv is Neve Tzedeck. In my last visit to Israel I spent an afternoon there with my camera (evidence of which I had to take down from my site due to hosting issues), and I decided to pop in for another visit.

In Tel Aviv, City Hall qualifies in my mind as the ugliest building in town. This is quite a dubious honour, in a town where the "ugliest" crown enjoys some fierce competition. Having worked in this building for a couple of months, I can confirm that it is just as hideous inside as it is outside. I was pleased to discover, therefore, an interesting project taking place there right now.
The entire southern facade of the building is being covered with artwork, depicting various artists' portraits of the city's street namesakes. It's really very striking. They're about half way through hanging up the portraits, and I'll try to get there to take a few more pictures once the project is done. Following a display period, the images will be sold in an auction to raise funds for a new fund supporting artists in the city.
I really need to find out if there's a street named "Seinfeld" in the city :).

Ok, so I'm (a) not good with deadlines, and (b) not good with counting. I don't *quite* have 26 things, but it's close enough!

I know I've posted a smaller version of this picture before, but I really love it, so here's a bigger version for you.
Ferry Building Market, San Francisco, May 2004
My apologies for not writing more, but Hamster Time is keeping me quite busy, so updates this summer are likely to be sporadic. As such, you should expect more pictures than words in this little space.
Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, May 2004
Today is just a super exciting day for me. First, the hammies were revealed, and for the most part, I hate them with the white hot passion of a million burning nuns. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Then, the new 26 Things challenge came out. The list consists of:
Lines / Mechanical / Stretch / Through /
Bottom / Organised / Different / Far Away /
Green / Mug / Dummy / At Night /
Liquid / Artificial / Out of Reach / Switch /
Relief / Blades / Missing / Underground /
Historic / Button / Popular / Grand /
Exotic / Delicious
I already have pictures for lines and mechanical. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!
I don't generally like to be in pictures, or even much care for pictures OF people, but I took this picture yesterday, and thought it would make a great submission to the Mirror Project. Mostely because I'm really obscured.
The link to my photo is here.
